I was diagnosed as a diabetic type 2 when I had a heart attack back in 1992. My instructions were to inject insulin twice a day and monitor my blood sugar levels carefully so that I stayed in control to avoid unwanted complications. This I was told would be a long term activity namely for the rest of my life.. Over the years I followed these instructions until 2006 when I thought there must be a better way and looked back on the years I was in The Royal Air Force, illness free and capable of running half marathons, so decided I was operating my body beyond its intended design limits. First of all I reduced my food intake and then increased my blood monitoring so that I could see which food types raised my sugar levels higher and for longer and they were eliminated. My exercise mostly walking was increased (didn’t take the car when I could walk) very quickly I could slowly reduce my insulin intake from nearly 90 units a day downwards. As weight dropped, my insulin reduced I began to think that reaching a zero might be possible. Reaching a zero insulin intake was achieved in less than six months and now nearly forty months later I am still insulin free with no diabetic medication with an HbA1c of approx 5.8. At the same time as this diabetic improvement I have been able to reduce my overall medication load. Essentially my healthy eating moved to vegetables, fruit and nuts, although I do not eat potatoes. My current mission is to explore the limits of insulin resistance to see if further health benefits can be realised.
Now many months (51) after eliminating the need for insulin I am finding many sites that would have helped or motivated me to have started long before 2006 to change my unhealthy life style.
The first site would be www.my-health-software.com which I used to initially monitor my blood pressure and more recently weight and blood glucose has been added. Blood glucose presents your blood results so that you can more easily see your before meal levels. Highly recommended.
Other sites have included Dr Mercola at www.mercola.com which gives you some basic guidance as to what can be acheived if you take charge of your own health. You are what you eat.
